WASHINGTON -- Indianapolis is slated to get $11.6 million in the first wave of stimulus money heading to states and cities.

The money, part of $177 million made available to Indiana this week from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, can be spent on public housing, homelessness prevention and community development projects.

It comes from the massive $787 billion stimulus package signed into law Feb. 17.

"I am pleased to announce that we are moving swiftly to get these much-needed funds out to states and cities to create jobs and help stimulate our economy," HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan said.

On Friday, Gov. Mitch Daniels said 29 transportation projects in 21 counties would receive funding through the stimulus package. It is the second round of transportation projects to receive money.

The projects announced Friday are valued at $43.6 million but do not include any work in Marion County. Projects in Hendricks, Morgan and Johnson counties did receive funds.

"Indiana is determined to move as quickly as any state in putting to good use the federal stimulus funds and trying to play our part, we hope, in bringing economic life back to the country," Daniels said in a news conference in his Statehouse office.

The largest chunk of housing and urban development money for Indianapolis -- $5.1 million -- is designated for the Indianapolis Housing Agency. The money can be used to modernize or develop public housing but can't be spent for operations or rental assistance.
